Additives in antifreeze fluids – what our fluids consist of?

What is the main ingredient of our antifreeze fluids?
The key to long-term and safe operation of systems lies in the additives
Once we have our fluid base, which is the raw material, it is time for the additives:
- Demineralised water, which is necessary to prepare the fluid and dilute the concentrate. It is very important to use high-purity water to prevent precipitation.
- Corrosion inhibitors, which protect the system from the damaging effects of corrosion and precipitation of deposits.
- Anti-foam agents, which prevent and effectively reduce foaming, enabling proper bleeding of the system.
- Stabilisers, which are responsible for maintaining the required pH and alkaline reserve to protect against acidification of the fluid and – consequently – against corrosion.
- Dyes, which are necessary for product identification and help to prevent accidental ingestion.
- Biocides, which are special additives used to protect the system against the growth of fungi, mould and micro-organisms that may interfere with its operation.
Demineralised water
As mentioned earlier, one of the most important antifreeze additives is demineralised water. Why is it not recommended to mix it with ordinary mains water?
Mains water contains such minerals as iron, magnesium and calcium that can eventually build up in the system in the form of deposits, leading to lower efficiency of the system and increasing its operating costs.
The same applies to diluting concentrates. In addition, concentrates are often mixed in incorrect proportions, as a result of which the additives lose their protective properties. And while we are on the subject of additives…
Antifreeze additives – corrosion inhibitors
We offer two advanced corrosion inhibitors: AQUACORR SI and AQUACORR OAT, which provide corrosion protection for such metals as: aluminium, copper, steel, brass, cast iron, as well as other materials used in systems. They help to extend the service life of the system, prevent corrosion, reduce energy consumption, reduce noise in pipes, improve thermal conductivity, remove deposits, prevent microbial growth and help to keep the system clean.
These particular two inhibitors are only used in water based systems. They are not used for antifreeze.
Stabilizers
All antifreeze fluids must have an alkaline pH (between 7.5 and 9) so as not to cause damage to system components. For this reason, every antifreeze fluid contains additives that bind acids and maintain its alkaline pH.
Dyes
Dyes are used for antifreeze fluids to ensure proper colour identification. For example, monopropylene glycol is coloured green, while monoethylene glycol is blue. In addition, our antifreeze fluids are available with a special leak detector to quickly and easily check for potential leaks in the system.
Biocides
These additives are used to minimise the risk of microbial and fungal growth inside such systems as airconditioning units, heat pumps and solar collectors.
Antifreeze additives – the key to effectiveness and efficiency
As can be seen, the key to long-term and safe use of antifreeze fluids in a refrigeration system is not just high-quality raw material. What is also needed are high-quality additives to protect the system against degradation, corrosion and the formation of deposits.
