How to safely store and use antifreeze fluids?
From our previous articles, you already know that glycol-based non-freezing liquids are essential for the proper functioning of various types of installations (heating, cooling, heat pumps, solar, etc.). We have emphasized multiple times how important it is to choose the right fluid and professionally fill the system. However, there is one topic we have never addressed before – how to safely store and use non-freezing liquids. In this article, we will discuss all the key information about safely handling non-freezing liquids.
Storage under appropriate conditions
Antifreeze should be stored in a location that is shaded, dry, and inaccessible to children and animals. Always keep the fluid in its original container with appropriate labels and product information.
Avoid contact with eyes and skin
While handling antifreeze, it’s important to always wear appropriate personal protective equipment such as gloves and safety goggles. In case of contact with the liquid, thoroughly rinse the affected skin areas with water and soap, and if necessary, consult a doctor. While for environmentally-friendly fluids, contact with eyes or skin shouldn’t pose a threat, in the case of toxic fluids, greater caution must be exercised.
Signs of improper use
If you notice any concerning signs in the fluid, such as cloudiness, sediment, or a change in color, contact the fluid manufacturer. Such changes could indicate product degradation or contamination that might be harmful to your installation. However, it could also be a natural process, so it’s important to inquire about the fluid’s condition at the source before making any decisions.
Disposal of used fluid
Never pour used non-freezing liquid directly into the environment or sewage system. As a responsible manufacturer and supplier, Procold can manage the disposal of used fluid or provide advice on its proper disposal.
Do not mix different types of fluids
Avoid mixing different types of antifreeze fluids unless the manufacturer explicitly states they are compatible. Improper mixing can result in loss of product effectiveness or even damage to the entire system.
Take care of the environment and animals
Remember that toxic antifreeze liquids are dangerous for animals, humans, and the environment. Do not leave leaking fluid (e.g., from a damaged container) on surfaces accessible to children, animals, or plants.
Store away from sources of fire and heat
Antifreeze fluids are flammable, so store them away from sources of fire, heat, and sparks. Do not store fluids near stoves, heaters, or other heat-generating devices.
Summary
Safe storage and use of antifreeze fluids are crucial for maintaining the safety of users, systems, and the environment. Following the above guidelines will help minimize the risk of accidents, contamination, and damages. Always read product labels, adhere to manufacturer’s recommendations, and comply with regulations to ensure proper and safe use of non-freezing liquids.
